What that means in practice

The tours listed here are sold by Viator and GetYourGuide. When you follow a link from one of these pages and go on to book, the platform pays us a share of its own commission. You pay the same fare either way; the price on the booking page is the operator's price, not a marked-up one.

What we are not

We are not a tour operator or a ticket office. We do not run any of these tours, employ any of these guides or hold your booking. Your contract is with the operator, through the platform.

We have no connection with Melk Abbey, the Benedictine community that runs it, or any of the towns, wineries and boat companies these tours stop at. We do not sell the abbey's own ticket.

How tours get listed

Operators cannot pay for placement, position or a badge. The badges are arithmetic: the best seller is the tour with the most reviews, the top-rated tour carries the highest rating across a substantial number of reviews, and the best value is the cheapest fare. Where one operator sells a similar tour on more than one platform, both can appear, because both are separately bookable.

The featured tours at the top of the homepage are three different ways to reach the abbey — the most-booked Wachau coach day with a guided abbey visit and a summer boat, the lowest fare with the longest time in Melk, and a private day that goes on to Hallstatt and Salzburg.

Prices, ratings and how current they are

Prices, star ratings and review counts belong to the operators and were read from their own listings on 16 September 2026. They move, and the figure at checkout is the one that counts. Every fare is quoted in US dollars, per person or per group as the listing prices it, because that is how the listings were captured; nothing is converted at an exchange rate. Where a page gives an abbey ticket price in euros, that is the abbey's own figure.

Where we state a fact about the abbey, it comes from Melk Abbey's own website, stiftmelk.at: hours, prices, tour times, house rules, access, the church services and the events calendar. The World Heritage facts come from the Austrian Commission for UNESCO, and the weather from GeoSphere Austria's Melk station. Where a figure comes from an operator, such as time at the abbey or a group size, the page says so.

What we deliberately do not publish

• Train fares between Vienna and Melk, which depend on your ticket and any discount card. The train times we print are a sample from ÖBB's own journey planner, read in September 2026; check your own date there before you travel.
• Danube boat timetables and fares between Melk, Spitz, Dürnstein and Krems, which change by season and which we have not read on the shipping lines' current pages.
• Skip-the-line entry. The abbey sells no such ticket: individual visitors buy at the ticket office, and groups reserve. The phrase appears only inside one operator's product title.
• A library figure of 130,000 volumes. The abbey's own site prints both 100,000 and 130,000; we use its figure of more than 100,000 books.
• Dates for next year's festivals and concert prices, until the abbey publishes them.
• Restrictions on tour coaches in Hallstatt, which we have seen only in a traveller's review.
