Melk Abbey Events 2026: Concerts, Prayer and Advent Singing
Hours, prices and access verified by the Melk Abbey Tours team — last checked 2026-09-16.
This page lists what the abbey has scheduled from mid-September 2026, as read
on 16 September 2026. The noon prayer runs every day, October brings Saint Coloman and three
evenings of music, and Advent singing closes the year. Planning your
Melk Abbey day trips from Vienna? Match the date first.
Dates and times can change. Check the abbey's own
calendar of events before you travel. Tours
run on their own timetable and do not build any of these events into the day, so check how long
yours gives you in Melk.
Daily prayer you can join
Noon prayer: every day at 12:00 in the abbey church,
in a form adapted so that guests can pray with the monks. No reservation.
The monks keep a fixed day. Morning prayer is at 7:00 on workdays, Mass is at 9:00 on Sundays
and feast days, and vespers is at 18:00. The calendar also lists the convent Mass at 7:00 in the
Summer Sacristy. The noon prayer is the one built for visitors, and it falls in the middle of a
day visit.

Visiting on one of these dates?
Day tours reach Melk from Vienna in the morning or the afternoon. Compare how long each gives you at the abbey.
Saturday 19 September: the Tweed Ride and the school ball
At 14:00 the Tweed Ride, a cycling parade known locally as the Radcorso, gathers in the
Prelate's Courtyard. That evening at 20:30 the abbey school holds its 52nd graduation ball. If
you visit that Saturday, expect the courtyards to be busier than usual.
Saint Coloman's day, 13 October
Saint Coloman is the patron saint of the abbey and of the town of Melk. Each year on 13 October
the abbey celebrates a special Mass in his honour. The town has held its Coloman fair on the same
day since 1451.
His relics lie in a sarcophagus in the left transept altar of the abbey church, which you
see on every visit. The legend of the Irish pilgrim hanged at Stockerau, and his burial at Melk
in 1014, is on the history of Melk Abbey.
October concerts and talks
Songs for Peace: Sunday 11 October 2026 at 18:30, in the Benedict Chapel.
Chamber orchestra: the Scheibbser Kammerorchester plays the Kolomanisaal on
Saturday 17 October 2026 at 19:00.
Globart: the Globart "Tage der Transformation 2026", Days of
Transformation, come to the abbey on Friday 23 October 2026.
Tickets for events are sold online through the abbey's
event ticket shop. Prices are set per event and shown there. Before you book an
evening concert, check when your tour leaves Melk, or plan your own way back to Vienna.
Advent singing in the abbey church
Advent singing: Sunday 29 November 2026 and Sunday
20 December 2026, both at 14:00, in the abbey church.
Both Sundays fall in the winter hours, when the abbey opens from 10:00 to 16:30. You can make a
day of it: the English guided tour at 11:00, lunch, then the singing at 14:00.
Exhibitions on now
Natura in Arte: eight painters of Austria's national parks show more than
seventy works in the Columned Hall. It runs from 24 March 2026 to 10 January 2027, daily from
9:00 to 16:00, and entry is free.
Wachau Lab9, Play Station: students aged 15 to 18 at the abbey school built
this exhibition about play and games. It fills the Wachau Lab in the Northern Bastion, and you
can play along and earn points.
Mineral collection: in the former prelate's library, under a ceiling painted
in 1643. It opens daily from 13:30 to 15:30 until 31 October 2026, 25 visitors at a time, and
your abbey ticket covers it.

What has just finished
These are the changes and events behind the reviews you may be reading from earlier this year.
| When | What | What it means for you |
|---|
| January to early April 2026 | Scaffolding in the library's main hall | Gone; partition walls stand in its place |
| Pentecost 2026 | Internationale Barocktage, the Baroque music festival | Over for this year; 2027 dates not yet published |
| 11 and 12 June 2026 | Natura in Arte closed for a special event | Open again daily until 10 January 2027 |
The Baroque festival, and how to hear about it
The Internationale Barocktage Stift Melk is the abbey's Baroque music festival. The abbey
places it at Pentecost, with concerts in the garden pavilion, and it won the festival special
prize of the Austrian Music Theatre Prize in 2025. Its 2026 edition is over, and the 2027 dates
are not yet published. The festival's own site has a free newsletter.
In summer the garden pavilion also hosts concerts in August. Dates for 2027 appear on the
abbey calendar once they are set.
