It is a day out of Vienna in a car or van that carries only your party. You set off from your
hotel or a place you agree, you stop where the itinerary says, and nobody else's delay becomes
yours. Some private days send a guide, some send an English-speaking driver, and one sends

The fares look high at first, so read the unit. Some are per person, from
$232 to $741. Others buy the whole vehicle, from $852 to $992. For a family
or a group of friends, a per-vehicle fare split between you can land close to a per-person

Why choose a private tour
You are collected from your hotel
Most private days start at your door, between 7:30 and 9:30. You skip the walk to the State
Opera with children or luggage, and you are dropped back at the end of the day. One private day
even lets you choose a start time between 9:00 and 18:00.
You get more time at the abbey, or a private tour inside
The Melk, wine and Dürnstein tour and the private Wachau tour to Dürnstein and Melk give you
two hours at Melk Abbey. The Danube Valley private tour puts a private 75-minute abbey tour in
the fare, the only fare we list that does. Most shared days give the abbey 90 minutes or less;
the Wachau day tour, with two and a half hours in Melk, is the exception.
Wheelchair users have a real choice

- Length. Five to seven hours on the shortest day, eight to ten on a Wachau
day, and eleven to thirteen with Hallstatt and Salzburg.
- Abbey ticket. Budget €16 per adult, or €20 with the abbey's guided tour,

- Book ahead. A private car is one booking for one party, so book as soon as
your date is fixed. Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the
start.
- Tell the operator your needs. Mention a wheelchair, a buggy or an infant
seat when you book. Several private days list infant seats.
- Winter. From 7 January to 19 March 2027 the abbey opens for guided tours
only, at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00, so ask your driver or guide to plan around them.

- If you travel alone or on a budget. The
Melk Abbey group tours start from $79 per person, and the
Wachau day tour gives you more time in Melk than most private days.
- If you want a Danube boat without paying extra. The
Wachau Valley tour with a Danube boat carries one in its summer season, in the
fare.
- If you want the abbey ticket settled but not a private fare. The shared
Wachau coach days include the abbey visit on a booking option.
- If you do not need a car at all. A direct train reaches Melk from Wien
