At Melk the season changes the visit more than the weather does. It sets the opening hours, whether you can go in without a guide, and whether the park is open. Picking the month for a Melk Abbey tour from Vienna? Start with those three.
Most of the visit is indoors: the museum, the Marble Hall, the library and the church. The weather decides the rest. The balcony, the Northern Bastion terrace and the park are all open to the sky.
The calendar matters more. From April to October the abbey opens 9:00 to 17:30 and the park is open too. From November it opens later and shuts earlier. From 7 January to 19 March you can only go in on a guided tour, and the park stays closed all winter.
Boat legs follow the season as well. The Wachau coach days include their river boat only in summer. The averages below are GeoSphere Austria's for its Melk station, at 307 metres, from 2008 to 2025. Rain has fewer years on record, so treat those figures as approximate.

The coldest month: days average 2.8 °C and nights -1.8 °C, with 58 hours of sun. Until 6 January the abbey opens 10:00 to 16:30. From 7 January you go in only on a guided tour, at 11:00, 13:30 or 15:00. The park is closed. Natura in Arte ends on 10 January.
The driest month, with about 17 mm of rain. Days reach 5.4 °C and nights stay below freezing. Every visit is guided, at 11:00, 13:30 or 15:00, in German or English. The park stays shut. Dress for cold corridors and a cold walk up from the station.
Days warm to 11.2 °C, and sunshine almost doubles to 162 hours. Guided visits only run until 19 March, though weekends in March open 10:00 to 16:30 with or without a guide. The 2027 season opens on 20 March, from 9:00 to 16:30.
Summer hours begin on 1 April: 9:00 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. The park opens 9:00 to 18:00. English tours run at 10:55 and 14:55. Days reach 16.7 °C, and the mineral collection opens daily. Boat legs on the Wachau coach days are back in season.
Days reach 19.8 °C, but rain jumps to about 81 mm over 11 rain days. A third English tour starts, at 13:55, and Spanish and French tours begin. Most of the visit is indoors. Keep a rain layer for the park, the balcony and the bastion terrace.
Days average 24.7 °C, with 255 hours of sun. Rain stays at about 81 mm, on about nine days. English tours run at 10:55, 13:55 and 14:55. The park is open until 18:00, so the pavilion and its shade suit the end of a hot afternoon.
The warmest and wettest month: 26.6 °C by day and about 86 mm of rain. Sunshine peaks at 266 hours. An Italian tour joins at 14:45 in July and August. Arrive at 9:00, when the doors open, and walk the park before the afternoon heat.
Days average 26.3 °C, and rain falls on about ten days. The park pavilion hosts summer concerts in August. English tours stay at 10:55, 13:55 and 14:55. Carry water for the climb from the town and the three levels of the park.
Days cool to 20.9 °C, and rain halves to about 46 mm. It is the last month of English tours at 13:55 and of Spanish and French tours. The park keeps summer hours. Warm, dry weather makes it an easy month for a full day in the Wachau.
Days fall to 14.6 °C, with 126 hours of sun. English tours drop to 10:55 and 14:55. Saint Coloman's Mass is on 13 October. The park closes at 17:00 from 25 October and shuts for winter after the 31st, when the mineral collection closes too.
Days reach 8.2 °C and sunshine falls to 70 hours. 1 November opens 9:00 to 16:30. From 2 November winter hours run 10:00 to 16:30, with tours at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00. The park is closed. Advent singing fills the church on 29 November.
The darkest month, with 56 hours of sun, and days of 4.2 °C. The abbey opens 10:00 to 16:30, but 24 December closes at 12:30. Advent singing returns on 20 December at 14:00. Short days leave little light for photos outside after mid-afternoon.

Spring, March to May: the season opens and the park with it. Days warm from 11 °C to 20 °C. May brings the first heavy rain, and a third English tour.
Summer, June to August: the warmest days, 25 to 27 °C, and the most sun. It is also the wettest stretch, with rain on nine to ten days a month. You get the most tour times and every language.
Autumn, September to October: September is warm and dry. October cools to 15 °C, Saint Coloman's day falls on the 13th, and the park closes at the end of the month.
Winter, November to February: days of 3 to 8 °C, shorter hours and a closed park. From 7 January to 19 March every visit is guided, so the rooms come with a guide whether you planned one or not.

The doors open at 9:00 from April to October. Arrive then if you travel on your own, and you have the full two and a half hours the abbey recommends before lunch. English tours start at 10:55 from April to October and at 11:00 in winter.
The noon prayer is at 12:00 in the abbey church, open to you with no reservation. Save the balcony and the bastion terrace for a dry spell, since both are outdoors. In winter the last entry is 15:45, and light fades soon after.
