Best Time to Visit Melk Abbey: Seasons, Hours and the Library Works
The best time to visit Melk Abbey is from May to September, when the hours are longest, the park is open and the English guided tours run three times a day. But each season changes the visit in its own way, and in 2026 and 2027 the library works matter too. Here is what opens and closes through the year.
When is the best time to visit Melk Abbey?
For most visitors, between May and September. From April to October the abbey opens 9:00 to 17:30, and the park and its garden pavilion are open. From May to September you can join an English guided tour at 10:55, 13:55 or 14:55, and Spanish and French tours run as well.
If you prefer the shoulder season, October keeps the full summer hours. Winter is possible, but from 7 January the abbey opens for guided tours only. The monthly temperatures and rainfall sit on the weather page; this guide covers what the calendar changes.
What changes in spring?
In 2026 the season opened on 28 March, with the abbey open 9:00 to 16:30 until the end of the month. From 1 April the full hours begin, 9:00 to 17:30, and the park opens with them, 9:00 to 18:00. In 2027 the with-or-without-a-guide season starts on 20 March.
In April and October the English guided tours start at 10:55 and 14:55. The mineral collection in the former prelate's library opens from 1 April to 31 October, daily from 13:30 to 15:30, and it is included in your ticket. From 30 March the Wachau Valley tour with a Danube boat adds its summer boat.
Summer: the longest hours and the boat season
From May to September you get the most choice. The abbey opens 9:00 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00, and the park stays open until 18:00. English tours run three times a day, Spanish at 14:50 and French at 15:05, and Italian tours join in July and August at 14:45.
This is also the boat season. The Danube Valley coach day adds its short cruise from April to October, and the pavilion café in the park serves from April to October. July is the warmest month at Melk, with an average high of 26.6 °C, so bring water and a hat for the park.
Autumn: Saint Coloman and the concert calendar
October keeps the summer hours, but the park closes earlier from 25 October, at 17:00, and the season ends on 1 November, when the abbey opens 9:00 to 16:30. From 2 November the winter hours begin.
On 13 October the abbey celebrates Saint Coloman, its patron saint, with a Mass. Coloman was an Irish pilgrim buried at Melk in 1014. The abbey's 2026 calendar also lists a chamber orchestra concert on 17 October and the Globart programme on 23 October. Our events page has the full, dated list.
What is Melk Abbey like in winter?
Quieter, shorter and more structured. From 2 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 the abbey opens 10:00 to 16:30, with or without a guide, and last admission is at 15:45. Guided tours run at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00.
From 7 January to 19 March 2027 you can visit only on a guided tour, in German or English, at the same three times. From 1 March 2027 weekends open again with or without a guide, 10:00 to 16:30. The park is closed from November to March, and the shared tours do not carry a boat.
If you book a tour for these weeks, choose one that plans the abbey visit for you. The Wachau Valley tour with a Danube boat includes the abbey visit on its winter dates. January is the coldest month, with an average high of 2.8 °C.
Is Melk Abbey open at Christmas and New Year?
On 24 December 2026 the abbey opens 10:00 to 12:30, with last admission at 11:45 and a single guided tour at 11:00. It is closed that afternoon.
Otherwise, from 2 November to 6 January the hours page lists 10:00 to 16:30 without further exceptions. The abbey's calendar also lists Advent singing in the abbey church at 14:00 on 29 November and 20 December 2026. Check the hours page again before you travel on a public holiday, because it can change.
How do the library works affect a visit in 2026 and 2027?
The library stays open, but you will not see all of it. The abbey is restoring the library in a project that runs to 2032, and the work inside the rooms continues to the end of 2027. From October 2025 about 16,000 books were moved out, while the Baroque volumes stay on display.
From April 2026 partition walls close parts of the two historical rooms in turn. In 2026 the walls stand on the north side of the small room and the south side of the main room. In 2027 they move to the opposite sides. If the library is your main reason to go, a 2026 and a 2027 visit show you different halves.
Which time of day should you choose?
Choose by the English guided tour, not the clock. If you travel on your own, joining at 10:55 leaves you the afternoon for the church, the Northern Bastion and the park. Joining at 14:55 suits a late start, but the last admission is at 17:00 in summer.
On a tour from Vienna, the operator sets your arrival. The Wachau day tour reaches Melk in the afternoon, after Krems and Dürnstein, and gives you two and a half hours. The private Hallstatt days stop at Melk first, early in the day, but give it an hour or less. The noon prayer at 12:00 in the abbey church is open to guests, if you are there at midday.
When do the tours carry a boat?
Only in the warmer months, and each tour sets its own season. The Danube Valley coach day adds a short cruise from April to October. The Wachau Valley tour with a Danube boat gives its boat season as 30 March to 3 November. The Danube Valley private tour sails from Spitz to Melk, and its listing gives no season, so ask the operator for a winter date.
Outside those months the shared days travel by road. If a boat is the point of your trip, book between April and October, and choose your tour by its boat leg before its price.
What runs all year at the abbey?
The abbey is a working Benedictine monastery, and its prayer day does not follow the tourist season. The noon prayer at 12:00 in the abbey church is open to guests in an adapted form, without a reservation. Vespers follow at 18:00, and on Sundays and feast days Mass is at 9:00.
The Northern Bastion and the Wachau Lab stay open all year and are part of your ticket. In 2026 the Wachau Lab shows "Play Station", made by students of the abbey school aged 15 to 18. The special exhibition "Natura in Arte", with paintings by the national park painters, runs in the Columned Hall until 10 January 2027, daily from 9:00 to 16:00, with free admission.
The light changes most. At Melk, July averages 266 hours of sunshine and December 56, so a winter visit is a shorter, dimmer day.
