Melk Abbey private tour · with Hallstatt and Salzburg
Melk Abbey came first, and nothing prepared them for the Baroque interior. They had time to take it in without rushing.

Melk, Hallstatt and Salzburg in one day, with nobody in the car but your party. Your driver collects you from your Vienna hotel at 7:30. Melk Abbey comes first, for about an hour, then Hallstatt, Lake Wolfgang and Salzburg. It is a thirteen-hour day, and the abbey ticket is not in your fare.
Your driver collects you in Vienna and brings you back at the end of the day.
The first stop, with your ticket bought at the gate.
Time to walk the village by the lake.
The longest stop of the day, and the last.
The fare shown is for the car; the van is sold at a different fare.
407 of them five stars.
The abbey suggests at least two and a half hours for the complete visit, and this day gives you about one. So decide before you arrive what you want from it. The abbey's guided tour takes about 50 minutes and covers the Imperial Corridor, the Marble Hall, the balcony and the library. Adults pay €20 with the tour, or €16 to walk round on your own, at 2026 prices.
Ask your driver what time you will reach Melk, and match it to the English tours. They start at 10:55 from April to October, and at 11:00 from November to March. From 7 January to 19 March 2027 you can only go in with a guide, apart from weekends in March. On those days, an 11:00 arrival matters.
After Melk you head for Hallstatt, for ninety minutes by the lake. A ten-minute photo stop at Lake Wolfgang breaks the drive on to Salzburg. There you have two and a half hours before the drive back to your hotel. Travellers call it a long day, and one said thirteen hours is not enough to do all three places justice.
What makes it work is the driver. One couple's driver asked what they wanted to see and built the day around it, and moved the schedule to dodge the weather. Another stopped so a family facing an unexpected cold, wet morning could buy jackets.
You pick the vehicle when you book. The fare shown buys a private car for up to three travellers. A private van takes up to seven at a different fare, so a family of five compares the van, not the car. Your driver speaks English, and German and Croatian are offered too.
The listing names a driver, not a guide. Travellers describe drivers who share stories and tips at every stop, but inside the abbey you walk on your own or join the abbey's tour. For every day with only your party, see the Melk Abbey private tours.
You have one day and want Melk, Hallstatt and Salzburg in it, without a coach. It suits couples, families with babies and small groups who want a driver who shapes the day to them. You accept long hours in the car, and a short look at the abbey rather than a long one.
The abbey is the point of your day: the private Danube Valley day with a private abbey tour spends 75 minutes inside with the ticket in the fare, and it lists wheelchair access. If you want a shared seat to Hallstatt for less, the Hallstatt coach from the State Opera stops outside the abbey for photos only.
There is no meeting point to find. Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Vienna at 7:30 and drops you back there at the end of the day. Check the pickup details on your confirmation, and have every passport with you when the car arrives.
The day ends at your door, so there is no late transport to arrange. For reaching the abbey on your own, by train or car, see how to get to Melk Abbey.

A long day, she warns, but a comfortable one in a van of their own, and the privacy made the hours easier.

They enjoyed every town, but next time they would spend longer in each one and see fewer.
