Buying the abbey ticket on the day
Entrance fees are not in this fare, and that is how it stays cheap. You buy your own ticket at the office in the first courtyard, with no reservation. Adults pay €16, families €32, and pupils and students up to 27 pay €8, at 2026 prices. A guided tour adds €4. Lockers sit in the first courtyard, on the right, if you want to leave a bag.
The itinerary puts Melk last, in the afternoon, so aim for the afternoon English tours. From May to September they start at 13:55 and 14:55. In April and October the afternoon tour is at 14:55, and from November to March at 13:30 and 15:00. From 7 January to 19 March 2027 you can only go in with a guide, apart from weekends in March, so plan on one of those tours.

Krems and Dürnstein before Melk
You spend the morning in two river towns. In Krems an der Donau your guide shows you round, then leaves you free time in the old town. Dürnstein comes next, for ninety minutes, under its blue church tower. There you can join a free tasting of schnapps, apricot products and non-alcoholic drinks at a distillery, and buy from the producer if you like.

What to do with your time in Melk
The abbey suggests at least two and a half hours for the complete visit, which is exactly what this day gives you. If you also want lunch, choose. The guided tour covers the rooms in about 50 minutes. Add the church, the Northern Bastion and, from April to October, the park, and your afternoon is full.

You meet at Operngasse 8, in the centre of Vienna, next to the State Opera. Look for a modern tour coach and staff wearing company identification or holding a tour sign. The coach leaves at 8:00.
