What the all-inclusive option adds
This day is sold in two shapes, and the difference is the abbey. Pick the all-inclusive option and your fare covers the abbey ticket and a guided visit, with the boat in summer. Pick the basic option in summer and you still get the boat, plus free time in Melk, but not the abbey itself. English and Spanish departures are sold separately, so choose your language at the same time.
If you book the basic option and change your mind in Melk, you can still go in. Individual visitors buy at the ticket office in the first courtyard, with no reservation. Adults pay €16, or €20 with a guided tour, at 2026 prices. Your stop in Melk is set by the coach, though, so the all-inclusive option is the calmer choice if the abbey is why you came.
A 75-minute guided tour of the abbey
The abbey's standard tour takes you up the Imperial Staircase and along the Imperial Corridor, 196 metres of portraits of Austria's rulers. You pass through the museum in the former imperial rooms to the Marble Hall, where Paul Troger painted the ceiling in 1731. Then you step out onto the balcony above the Danube, and into the library, furnished in 1735.
The library stays open during its restoration, but partition walls close part of each room in stages until the end of 2027. After the library you walk down into the abbey church. Photos are not allowed in the rooms, so save your camera for the balcony. One Italian traveller's guide checked the abbey's own timetable and added them to an Italian tour.
Boat season and abbey season are not the same
The two halves of this day follow different calendars. The boat runs from 30 March to 3 November. The winter version, from 4 November to 22 March, includes the abbey and drops the boat. So if you travel in summer and want both, only the all-inclusive option gives you both.

Leaving Operngasse 8 for the Wachau
- Operngasse 8, by the State Opera. Board the coach for a drive of about 75 minutes.
- Krems an der Donau, 90 minutes. A guided look round and sightseeing in the old town.
- Dürnstein, 45 minutes. About 15 minutes upriver, with a guided walk through the village.
- Melk, 1 hour of free time. About 45 minutes further on, in the town below the abbey.
- Melk Abbey, 75 minutes with a guide. On winter dates, and on the all-inclusive option in summer.
- Back to Vienna. About 75 minutes by coach, to Biogena Plaza.

This is your first trip into the Wachau and you want the abbey explained, not just seen. You like a set timetable, a guide on the coach, and three towns ticked off in one day. You are travelling in summer and the river matters to you, or in winter and the abbey is the point.
Book something else if

Where the coach leaves: Operngasse 8
You meet at Operngasse 8, 1010 Vienna, beside the State Opera. The meeting point can vary with the option you book, so check the address on your confirmation the night before. Arrive a little early, with your passport or ID card to hand.
The coach does not come back to the Opera. It finishes at Biogena Plaza, so ask your guide on board where that is if you have evening plans. Every tour's Vienna meeting point is set out on how to get to Melk Abbey.
Know before you go
- Pick your option before you pay. In summer, the abbey ticket and its guided visit come only with the all-inclusive option.
- Winter dates have no boat. From 4 November to 22 March you get the abbey visit instead of the river.
- Carry a passport or ID card. You need one with you on the day, and pets cannot come along.
- Lunch is yours to buy. It is not in the fare, so budget for a meal in your free time.
- No photos inside the abbey. You can take pictures on the balcony, in the courtyards and on the Northern Bastion.
- Part of the library is walled off. Restoration closes sections of both rooms in stages until the end of 2027.
