Melk Abbey group tour · Wachau with a Danube boat
The tour ran in English, but the guide checked whether an Italian abbey tour was running and added them to it.
Roberta · Italy · August 2026

Krems, Dürnstein and Melk in one day, with a guide who explains the valley as you go. You leave from beside the State Opera. In summer your day adds a boat on the Danube, and you choose at booking whether the abbey ticket and a 75-minute guided visit are in your fare. In winter the abbey is in, and the boat is not.
In the fare on every winter date, and on the all-inclusive option in summer.
From 30 March to 3 November, you see the valley from the water.
A guided look at Krems an der Donau before the drive upriver.
The blue church tower, and the ruin where legend held Richard the Lionheart.
Time in the town below the abbey before your tour starts.
4.5 from 1,607 travellers, who rate the transport 4.8 out of 5.
This day is sold in two shapes, and the difference is the abbey. Pick the all-inclusive option and your fare covers the abbey ticket and a guided visit, with the boat in summer. Pick the basic option in summer and you still get the boat, plus free time in Melk, but not the abbey itself. English and Spanish departures are sold separately, so choose your language at the same time.
If you book the basic option and change your mind in Melk, you can still go in. Individual visitors buy at the ticket office in the first courtyard, with no reservation. Adults pay €16, or €20 with a guided tour, at 2026 prices. Your stop in Melk is set by the coach, though, so the all-inclusive option is the calmer choice if the abbey is why you came.
The abbey's standard tour takes you up the Imperial Staircase and along the Imperial Corridor, 196 metres of portraits of Austria's rulers. You pass through the museum in the former imperial rooms to the Marble Hall, where Paul Troger painted the ceiling in 1731. Then you step out onto the balcony above the Danube, and into the library, furnished in 1735.
The library stays open during its restoration, but partition walls close part of each room in stages until the end of 2027. After the library you walk down into the abbey church. Photos are not allowed in the rooms, so save your camera for the balcony. One Italian traveller's guide checked the abbey's own timetable and added them to an Italian tour.
The two halves of this day follow different calendars. The boat runs from 30 March to 3 November. The winter version, from 4 November to 22 March, includes the abbey and drops the boat. So if you travel in summer and want both, only the all-inclusive option gives you both.
Lunch is not in the fare in any season. The coach leaves you an hour in Melk before the abbey tour, which is your best window to eat. For other shared days side by side, including one with more time in Melk, see the Melk Abbey group tours.
This is your first trip into the Wachau and you want the abbey explained, not just seen. You like a set timetable, a guide on the coach, and three towns ticked off in one day. You are travelling in summer and the river matters to you, or in winter and the abbey is the point.
You want the lowest fare and your own pace inside the abbey: the Wachau day tour with two and a half hours in Melk gives you more time there. If you want only your party and the abbey ticket in the fare, the private Danube Valley day with a private abbey tour collects you from your hotel.
You meet at Operngasse 8, 1010 Vienna, beside the State Opera. The meeting point can vary with the option you book, so check the address on your confirmation the night before. Arrive a little early, with your passport or ID card to hand.
The coach does not come back to the Opera. It finishes at Biogena Plaza, so ask your guide on board where that is if you have evening plans. Every tour's Vienna meeting point is set out on how to get to Melk Abbey.

The river cruise was lovely, the abbey was the high point, and the guide kept the group at a good pace all day.

The older guide was kind and easy to understand. Dürnstein could have had a little longer, but the rest of the timing worked.
