How to Visit Melk Abbey in 2026: Hours, Entry and the English Tour Times

Most first-time visitors expect to book Melk Abbey online, weeks ahead. You do not need to. The surprise is the other way round: most day tours from Vienna do not put the abbey ticket in your fare, so you may pay at the gate anyway. Here is how the visit works in 2026, from the ticket office to the train, and where a Melk Abbey tour from Vienna fits in.

Where and how to buy tickets

As an individual visitor, you buy at the ticket office in the first courtyard. You need no reservation, and you can buy a place on the next guided tour at the same counter. Only groups of 20 or more must reserve ahead, and they pay €15 each. Pupils and students up to 27 pay €8 with ID.

• Tickets are sold at the abbey's own counters. Combination tickets can also be bought from partner sites.
• Combination tickets pair Melk with Göttweig Abbey for €27, Schallaburg for €28.50 and Schloss Artstetten for €29.60.
• A carer enters free when the disability card states the need.
• There is no fast-track ticket. The abbey sells one kind of admission, and everyone buys at the same counters.

Which tours put the ticket in your fare

This is the question that decides your budget. Tour fares cover transport and a guide or driver, and only sometimes the abbey.

• Ticket in the fare: the private Danube Valley day with a private abbey tour, from $741 per person.
• Ticket on an option: the Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey tour with a Danube boat includes it on winter dates and on its all-inclusive option in summer.

Getting there from Vienna

By train, regular services run to Melk from Vienna and St Pölten. From Melk railway station the abbey is a walk of about 10 to 15 minutes through the town centre. Check the rail timetable for your date before you set out.

By boat, the river pier is about 30 minutes on foot: along Fährstraße, over the green lifting bridge and through the pedestrian zone, then up the stairs. Wiener Straße avoids the stairs. By car, set your sat-nav to Stiftsstraße, 3390 Melk. Parking is free once you validate your parking ticket at the cash desk in the first courtyard. The climb, and getting in with a wheelchair

The abbey sits on a rock above the town, so the walk from the centre ends uphill. Drivers have the easiest arrival: a lift runs from the car park level to the entrance level, then a level path. Most of the visit is wheelchair accessible, and staff help where it is not. You can borrow one of two wheelchairs by calling ahead on +43 2752 555 232. What you cannot bring or do inside

These house rules catch visitors out, so read them before you arrive.

• No photos or video in the rooms. You can take private photos on the balcony, in the courtyards, the park and on the bastion.
• No eating or drinking in the exhibition rooms.
• Keep 30 cm from the art. Step closer and a silent alarm goes off.
• No bikes or scooters in the rooms, courtyards or park. Wheelchairs, walking aids and baby buggies are fine.
• Dogs stay in the courtyards, on a leash. Service and guide dogs may go everywhere.
• Use the lockers in the first courtyard, on the right, for anything bulky.

How long to allow

The best time to visit

Come between April and October if you want the park, which closes from November to March. Winter has its own rule: from 7 January to 19 March 2027 you can only go in with a guide, apart from weekends in March. July is the warmest month at Melk, with afternoons averaging 26.6 °C. The library is under restoration in 2026 and 2027. It stays open, but partition walls close part of each room in stages. If the library is your reason to come, you still see it, just not all at once.

What is within walking distance

Everything you need is on foot. The town of Melk sits right below the abbey, on the route from the station. The abbey restaurant, in the former orangery, is inside the grounds, and from April to October a café opens in the park. The Danube Cycle Path passes the town, and the river pier is half an hour's walk away.
