Melk Abbey Only, or Melk With Hallstatt? Choosing Your Day from Vienna
The short answer. Choose a Wachau day if the abbey is why you are going: you get one to two and a half hours in Melk, plus Dürnstein or Krems, in 5 to 11 hours. Choose a Hallstatt day if you want Austria's lakes and Salzburg too, and accept 30 minutes to an hour at the abbey in a day of 11 to 13 hours. With two free days, do one of each.
Every day from Vienna that reaches Melk is one of two kinds. One spends the day in the Wachau, the river valley between Melk and Krems. The other uses Melk as a first stop on the long road to Hallstatt and Salzburg. The price lists hide the real trade-off, which is time inside the abbey. Why time at the abbey is the whole question
The abbey suggests at least two and a half hours for the complete visit. Its guided tour alone takes about 50 minutes, and the church, the Northern Bastion and the park come after. So one hour buys you the tour or the church, not both at an easy pace. Thirty minutes buys you the view from the outside.

The case for a Wachau day
Pick the Wachau if you want to go inside and understand what you see. Your day stays in one river valley, so less of it is spent on the road. You also get Dürnstein and Krems, and on some days a boat.

The case for a Hallstatt day
Pick Hallstatt if Melk is one of several places you want to see and your time in Austria is short. You see the abbey, the lake village and Salzburg in one day, and you do not have to plan a second trip. The cost is hours in a vehicle and a short stop at Melk.
